"People eat more eggs and poultry than ever, but the world’s reliance on a few high-yielding breeds is edging out hundreds of others: Nearly a third of chicken breeds are at risk of extinction. That’s alarming because many varieties have traits, like heat or pathogen resistance, that could be invaluable in the future."
I have a speckled hamburgh bantam, her name is Messy or Eunice. Depends on the day.
Thanks to my friend @sarahnow for the heads up.

I raise Dominiques! They are an awesome heritage breed. I want to get into Dorkings, but that breed is seriously compromised. Almost lost.
I am sad to say that I don't know if any of my birds would be considered heritage. I have a Delaware, Jersey Giant, Barred Rock, Australorp, Rhode Island Red and a Buff Orpington.
Hi O! I read that quote in National Geographic I think... Is that where you found it? That was an interesting article, I thought you might like it when I read it.
Oh Wow, That is very interesting, that certain chicken are going to be extinct. Hopefully we can do something to prevent that. I raise a couple chickens of my own.

I am so glad a friend forwarded me a link to your blog. Not only do i love reading your chicken info (as a newbie myself), but I'm inspired by you and what you mean for our future on this great lovely planet. Just wanted to write a thank you for the sharing you do here.
Orren, I enjoy reading your posts. Ever since writing about you as an inspiring kid of the month for my own blog, I have enjoyed checking out your blog to see what you're up to and the things you have to say. I always find such interesting information here.
You have had a big impact on me and the way I eat--the food I buy for my family, the food choices I make. Thank you. Keep being who you are--the world needs more Orrens.
Your friend,
Michaele
That is a nice chicken you have there. I raise Dorkings and a couple other breeds on my farm.
